CommunityCare Foundation completes first round of grants for 2001
Springdale, AR The board of directors of CommunityCare Foundation, Inc. announced its first round of grants for 2001 today. Walter Turnbow, chair of the board of directors, said that a total of $1,862,208 was awarded to 21 agencies serving Washington and Benton counties. Grants range in size from $8,000 to $700,000 with a median award size of $50,000. The smallest grant was $8,000 to the Decatur Public Library to automate the card catalog. The largest single grant in this cycle was for $700,000 to the Harvey and Bernice Jones Center for Families for general operating support. This is the second year of awarding grants for CommunityCare Foundation, which was established in 1998. In 2000, the foundation funded 101 grants totaling $4,596,727 during three application cycles. The Foundation expects to award approximately $5,000,000 during 2001, through two grant application periods. An alphabetical list of all grants funded in May 2001, follows: Adult Development Center of Benton County, Rogers, $60,000 to fund transportation costs for the disabled adults who receive care and education at the Center. Arts Center of the Ozarks, Springdale, $105,000 for program expansion, including hiring a development officer, a music director, and a box office representative. Bella Vista Public Library, Bella Vista, $18,480 to purchase software, and provide staff training to complete the Library's computer/software conversion. Benton County Health Unit, Bentonville, $100,000 to complete the expansion and renovation of the existing facility in order to provide more efficient health services to county residents. Benton County Sunshine School, Parents As Teachers (P.A.T.) Program, Bentonville, $86,714 to support the salaries, training and program costs of four Parents As Teachers instructors. Benton County Women's Shelter, Bentonville, $42,400 to fund art therapy programs and to purchase a new vehicle to provide transportation for Shelter clients. Bentonville School District-Spring Hill Middle School, Bentonville, $21,725 to construct an outdoor science center which will be available to all Bentonville School District students. Circle of Life Hospice, Comfort Center, Springdale, $100,000 challenge grant to help purchase a home to use as a palliative care clinic. Community Clinic - St. Francis House, Springdale, $150,000 for general operating support to provide healthcare services to the working poor. Decatur Elementary School, Decatur, $22,500 to purchase equipment for the first phase of the elementary playground project. Decatur Public Library, Decatur, $8,000 to purchase a new automation system, two computers and a printer. City of Elm Springs, Springdale, $18,861 to fund renovation and remodeling of the Community Center/City Hall building. Gentry School District, Gentry, $43,197 for start-up expenses of the after-school Trailblazer Club, including equipment, program expenses, and half the salaries for five staff. Jones Center for Families, Springdale, $700,000 in general operating support to provide educational and recreational services. Kids for Health, Springdale, $100,000 to provide health education services to elementary school students in Springdale. North Arkansas Symphony Society, Fayetteville, $50,000 for general operating support, including sponsorship of the Youth Symphony, Adventures in Music, and Symphony Saturdays. Northwest Arkansas for Nurses, Springdale, $25,000 to provide scholarships at the five schools of nursing in northwest Arkansas. Office of Human Concern, Rogers, $70,000 to provide funding for five Senior Activity Centers to continue home-delivered meals and transportation services. Siloam Springs Children's Center, Siloam Springs, $22,200 to upgrade the playground and meet new State regulations. Springdale School District-Lake Fayetteville, Environmental Study Center, Springdale, $18,131 to purchase a spectrophotometer and printer, two computers and additional laboratory equipment to serve students from Springdale and Fayetteville. Washington County HIV Clinic, Fayetteville, $100,000 in general operating support for services to HIV patients and education for health professionals and the general public about HIV. Walter Turnbow indicated that the foundation will be conducting only two grant cycles in 2001, and that the next deadline for grant applications to CommunityCare Foundation is August 31, 2001.
