        CommunityCare Foundation announces its second round of grants for 2001

Springdale, AR — The board of directors of CommunityCare Foundation, Inc. today announced its second round of grants for 2001. Walter Turnbow, chair of the board of directors, said that a total of $2,275,607 was awarded to 40 agencies serving northwest Arkansas.

Grants range in size from $4,546 to $187,000 with an average award size of $57,000. The smallest grant was $4,546 to Peel House in Bentonville to fund the WhatÕs Right With Our Youth project. The largest single grant in this cycle was for $187,000 to Community Development Corporation of Bentonville/Bella for kitchen equipment and furnishings for the new Osage Terrace Assisted Living project.

This round of contributions completes the second year of grantmaking by CommunityCare Foundation, which was established in 1998 as a result of the sale of Northwest Health Systems, including the hospitals in Springdale and Bentonville. In 2000, the foundation funded 101 grants totalling $4,596,727. This year, they have funded 61 grants totalling $4,137,815, plus special projects, including All Children Excel in School (ACES) and the Nonprofit Learning Series, to make a total expenditure of $5 million.

In addition to approving grants, the Foundation board of directors made several changes to the funding guidelines for implementation in 2002. New funding guidelines were approved for local chapters of national health organizations, allowing funding of local expenses for startup, educational programs and direct client services. The deadlines for submission of grant applications in 2002 were changed to January 31 and July 31.

An alphabetical list of all grants funded in November 2001, follows:

Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas, Springdale, $14,000 to maintain and grow the Bigs in School program at Lee Elementary.

Boys & Girls Club of Benton County, Capital Campaign, Bentonville, $150,000 to support the new facility in Bella Vista.

Children's Safety Center, Springdale, $78,000: $40,000 challenge grant for support of general operating costs, and $38,000 to hire and train a development officer.

Community Development Corp of Bentonville/Bella Vista, Osage Terrace Assisted Living, Bentonville, $187,000: $102,000 for kitchen equipment, and $85,000 for dining room furnishings.

Conductive Education of Northwest Arkansas, Inc., Springdale, $12,000 to provide for the tuition of economically disadvantaged children.

Council on Aging-Meals on Wheels, Fayetteville, $35,000 challenge grant to support the Meals on Wheels program.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (C.A.S.A.), Springdale, $20,000 to support general operating costs.

Family Network, Teen Challenge: Parenting Before 20, Springdale, $55,736 to expand the parenting skills program outreach efforts with teen parents.

Helen R. Walton Children's Center, Classroom Renovation Project, Bentonville, $13,000 to purchase educational equipment.

Helping Oncology Patients Excel (HOPE, Inc.), Fayetteville, $25,320 to provide program support.

Hope for Tomorrow Pediatric Foundation, Fayetteville, $5,000 to purchase equipment for therapy services provided in school districts throughout northwest Arkansas.

John Powell Senior Activity Center, Springdale, $53,000 to complete renovation of the kitchen and bathrooms.

KIDCARE, Springdale, $25,000 to support general operations.

Lifestyles, Inc., Employment Opportunities, Fayetteville, $54,000to develop a supported employment business plan and implementation of the plan.

National Conference for Community and Justice, Springdale, $41,151 to support general operating costs.

Northwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC), Bentonville, $47,600 to develop new classes - English for the Workplace and Spanish for Non-Spanish Speaking Managers.

Northwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC), Bentonville, $21,863 to purchase pre-hospital trauma life support equipment for Allied Health training programs.

Northwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC), Paso-a-Paso Student Mentoring & Retention Program, Bentonville, $39,350 to hire tutors at the middle schools and high school and to support the summer program.

Northwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC), Bentonville, $22,093 to purchase instructional materials and computer stations for use in the ESL Bridge to Higher Education classes.

Northwest Arkansas Crisis Intervention Center, Springdale, $40,500 to provide program support for the Touching Home Service.

Northwest Arkansas Free Health Center, Fayetteville, $32,000 to support the salary needs of a nurse practitioner and a volunteer recruiter to expand the medical and dental services of the clinic.

OHC - Nonprofit Technology Support, Springdale, $23,115 to support operating expenses to establish information technology guidance for nonprofit organizations.

Ozark Guidance, Inc., Springdale, $150,000 to support the construction of a new facility in Bentonville.

Ozark Natural Science Center, Huntsville, $129,855 to support capital improvements.

Peel House, Bentonville, $4,546 to fund "What's Right With Our Youth," the hands-on learning program designed for the children residing at the Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter.

Project for Victims of Family Violence, Inc., Fayetteville, $75,000: $40,000 challenge grant to support program expansion and $35,000 to support general operating costs.

Restoration Ministries-Children's Advocacy Center, Rogers, $36,488 to support general operating expenses, the printing of brochures in English and Spanish, and to provide sexual assault nurse training.

Richardson Center, Inc., Fayetteville, $150,000 to support the renovation of a building in Springdale.

Seven Hills Homeless Shelter, Inc., Fayetteville, $35,000 for general operating expenses.

Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Benton County, Bentonville, $100,000: $81,500 to support scholarships, and $18,850 for guidance/counseling and a math-tutoring program.

Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Washington County, Springdale, $86,000: $71,000 to support general operating expenses, and $15,000 challenge grant to support scholarships.

Springdale Fire Department, Springdale, $46,400 to purchase 12-lead cardiac monitors for four ambulances.

Springdale School District Elmdale Elementary School, Springdale, $28,900 to continue the Neurofeedback Intervention Program.

Springdale School District-Southwest Junior High School, Overage and Minority Program, Springdale, $31,360 for equipment, teacher training, and transportation.

University of Arkansas, Springdale, $34,830 to support the expanded behavioral intervention services for early childhood programs and schools of Schmieding Development Center.

University of Arkansas Museum, Fayetteville, $24,000 to support teacher training and transportation for school children to attend the Dinosaur Days exhibit.

Village House, Inc., Bella Vista, $17,500 for a feasibility study on adult day care needs in northwest Arkansas.
