        CommunityCare Foundation Announces Grants

Springdale, AR — CommunityCare Foundation announced grants totaling $1,065,450 in the areas of Education, Health, and Immigration. "Our board feels that that these grants represent a long-term investment in the future of northwest Arkansas. We are pleased to be working with very innovative and knowledgeable organizations," explained Board Chairman Randy Lawson.

Education Initiative

  • Middle Grade Literacy
    • $110,000 to Springdale School District for the third year of a professional development program to train middle school and junior high teachers in instructional strategies for reading, and to purchase books for classroom libraries.
  • International Baccalaureate
    • $58,000 to Bentonville School District for continued implementation of the International Baccalaureate Programme in Bentonville High School.
    • $67,100 to Springdale School District for continued implementation of the International Baccalaureate Programme in Springdale High School.
    • $110,000 to Springdale School District to begin faculty training to establish the International Baccalaureate Programme in two elementary schools.

Health Initiatives

  • Bilingual Nursing Education
    • $156,100 to Northwest Arkansas for Nurses to support the third year of a program to recruit, train, and retain bilingual nurses. Funds are used primarily to provide scholarships and stipends for bilingual students in area nursing schools.
  • Other
    • $280,000 to Northwest Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute toward the purchase of a Varian Trilogy Linear Accelerator.

Immigration Initiatives

  • Adult Education and Job Training
    • $49,500 to Dogwood Literacy Council for a joint program with the Literacy Council of Benton County to initiate English As A Second Language programs for adults in Gravette and Sulphur Springs.
    • $65,000 to Hispanic Women's Organization of Arkansas for the third year of the Guiding, Empowering and Mentoring (GEM) program.
    • $52,000 to Northwest Arkansas Community College for the Building the Future program that teaches financial literacy to Spanish-speaking working adults.
    • $55,000 to Ozark Literacy Council for the third year of a workplace literacy program for adult immigrants.
    • $62,700 to University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences/Area Health Education Center for the third year of the Medical Interpreter Training Program.

The grants announced this week bring the total giving of the foundation to $27 million over the past seven years, with approximately half of that amount going to Education Initiatives. In 2006, the Foundation is making grants in the areas of Capacity Building for Nonprofit Organizations (13%), Education Initiatives (41%), Health Initiatives (39%), and Immigration Initiatives (7%).

CommunityCare Foundation is the surviving entity from the nonprofit Northwest Health System and received the funds from the sale of the assets of the two hospitals. These funds have been invested and grants are made to community organizations from the earnings on those investments.
