Space is limited for this popular program. For the first time organizations can register up to four individuals for Fast Forward. Registration will be first come, first served. Organizations submitting registrations must commit to one staff member and one board member participating in all four sessions.

The cost for all four sessions of Fast Forward is $100 per person up to a limit of four people per agency. Payment must accompany registration forms. Deadline for registration is August 29, 2003. To register click here.

The four sessions of Fast Forward will be facilitated by the Center for Nonprofit Management from Dallas, Texas. Facilitator biographies may be found below.

This year's Fast Forward sessions will conclude with a working lunch. These interactive sessions are designed to drive home the learning from each workshop through exercises, discussion, and mini-action plans. At the end of each luncheon, attendees will commit to specific action items and agree to report their progress to at least one other attendee from a different agency before the next Fast Forward session.

Center for Nonprofit Management

The Center for Nonprofit Management, founded in 1980, is the largest nonprofit resource center that provides comprehensive management assistance and training to public charities in the North Central Texas region. It is among the top ten management support organizations in the nation in terms of size, nonprofits served, and quality of service offerings. Each year, the Center assists more than 1,200 nonprofit organizations by providing training, consulting and other resources to improve organization effectiveness.

The Center has more than 20 years of experience supporting nonprofits to deliver services more efficiently and effectively. Nonprofits with diverse missions benefit from training, consultations, technology support, and the Center's other services. Among the ways the Center assists agencies in building their capacity are: examining managing board-executive relationships, planning agency specific strategies, gaining insight into best practices for fundraising, positioning with constituents, and using technology to administer programs.

The Center also offers agency custom training programs for local, national and international agencies. Its custom training clients include:

  • A corporate University for the staff at the international headquarters of Young Presidents' Organization.
  • Team building for a division of the Health Care Financing Administration.
  • Executive Director Development through the Center's Nonprofit Entrepreneur Academy.
  • A tow-day conference on Governance and Volunteer Management for NEWH, Inc. a national organization involved in the hospitality industry.
  • Fund Development training for the national and affiliate staff of SER-Jobs National, Inc.

Most recently the Center has designed, "Joining A Nonprofit Board," a training program for corporate executives considering nonprofit board service. Current clients for this program include Centex Construction, Comerica Bank-Texas and JP Morgan Chase.

Program Facilitators

This group of energetic, highly-talented individuals will serve as facilitators for the breakout sessions.

Sharon G. Bailey, M.A.,is Director of Education at the Center for Nonprofit Management. Before joining the Center in 1998, she spent six years working in the urban and community forestry field. She has held positions directing programs at the local level, with the Dallas Parks Foundation, and nationwide, with the National Tree Trust in Washington, D.C. Sharon has served on the boards of several grassroots nonprofits, and is currently chair of WordSpace, a North Texas organization dedicated to promoting the practice and appreciation of imaginative language in traditional and experimental forms. A graduate of the Master of Arts in Humanities program at the University of Texas at Dallas, she holds a B.A. in literature from the University of Dallas.

J. Scott Buchanan, D.P.A., CFRE is principal of J. Scott Buchanan and Associates, a professional consulting service for non-for-profit institutions and organizations in the areas of fundraising, planning, constituency relations, communications, and management. Prior to establishing his consulting business in 1983, Dr. Buchanan was Assistant President and Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Austin College, where he served as an executive development officer for 15 years. He has additional years of experience in the media and in public relations and advertising. He has served in positions of leadership in church, professional, cultural, and civic organizations. He holds a bachelor's degree in journalism, master's degrees in student personnel and guidance and in public administration, and a doctorate in public administration. He is a past president of the Dallas Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Philanthropic Counsel, and a member of the National Committee on Planned Giving.

Cynthia B. Nunn assumed the position as President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, Inc., January 1, 2001. In that role, she is responsible for the leadership, management and day-to day operations of a $3.5 million budget and staff of up to 140 professional and support staff. The agency serves over 9,000 youth annually providing targeted programs delivered through 9 Branch "Clubs" within the metroplex. Her immediate past employment was as Executive Director of Bryan's House, a nationally acclaimed model for pediatric AIDS services and the only agency of its kind in North Texas. Before accepting the leadership role at Bryan's House, she was the Director of Management Consulting Services for the Center for Nonprofit Management in Dallas, Texas. In that position, Mrs. Nunn assisted hundreds of nonprofits in gaining the technical assistance and resources to incorporate and effectively manage and lead their organizations. Mrs. Nunn has served on numerous boards and advisory committees throughout the metroplex and as a judge for the Houston Arts Council's nonprofit management technical assistance program for five years. Mrs. Nunn earned a B. A. degree from Wilberforce University in Ohio. She is a 1989 graduate of Leadership Dallas, a 2002 and 2003 graduate of the Advanced Executive Leadership Training sponsored by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Leadership Institute at Clemson University, Clemson, SC, and has received significant nonprofit and management training.

Rhonda Pherigo, M.A. is Director of Collaboration Services at the Center for Nonprofit Management. She holds an MA in sociology from UT - Arlington and has expertise in planning, program development, and group process. Before joining the Center in 1999, Ms. Pherigo served as Health Planner with the Tarrant County Public Health Department. She has co-authored publications on community negotiated environmental strategies, ethics of care, and complex adaptive systems.

Carole V. Rylander, CFRE is Principal and founder of Rylander & Associates, a professional consulting firm serving nonprofit organizations in funds development, planning and management. She was Director of Development for the Greater Dallas Community of Churches where she served as the senior development officer for 14 years and successfully developed and implemented strategies that supported a quadrupling of the development department and the revenues it raised.

Susan G. Saunders, MPA is Principal of SGS Solutions, an organizational development consultancy. Prior to founding SGS Solutions, she served as Grants Administrator for The Meadows Foundation where her duties encompassed policy, internal operations, and grant making. She also served as Executive Director for Medisend International, a nonprofit organization involved in collecting surplus medical equipment and supplies for donation to hospitals and medical services in developing countries. She has also worked as Director of Marketing/Communications for AED, an international consulting firm, where she managed large-scale maternal and child health programs in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and designed and managed projects in developing countries during her tenure as Vice President of Triton Corporation.

W. Elliott Stephenson, Ph.D., is the principal of WES Training & Consulting, a firm specializing in organizational development, training, and meeting facilitation. His career has included serving as Assistant Executive Director for the Dallas Urban League and Executive Director of the Dallas/Fort Worth Minority Business Development Council. He holds a doctorate from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

Roslyn Dawson Thompson is principal and chief creative officer of dawson|duncan, a full service marketing communications firm based in Dallas, which she founded in 1986. dawson|duncan serves regional, national and international corporate and nonprofit clients, providing research, communications and marketing strategies, branding, print and electronic collateral material design, public affairs and advocacy programs, internal and external communications programs (see www.dawsonduncan.com). Roslyn's particular expertise and passion are the development of brand identities and marketing strategies for nonprofit organizations, businesses and corporations, and she lectures frequently on branding and marketing. She is a 30-year veteran of the communications and marketing industry, with a career that spans broadcast journalism, print journalism, advertising, promotions, public relations, teaching and training.

Kim Young is a senior account executive with dawson|duncan, a full-service marketing communications firm based in Dallas. She has more than 20 years of marketing, corporate communications, public affairs and media relations experience, as well as a strong background in print, digital, radio and broadcast production. During her career, Young has worked with regional, national and international corporations and nonprofit organizations, giving her valuable insights from "both sides of the desk."
